Movie Review: Watcher

This is one of those streaming finds that seem pretty hopeful. We all know the feeling of scrolling endlessly through a Netflix category (or in this case Hulu.) And usually, it’s not worth it. There are some movies, though, which stand out from the list. This is one of those, due to the dark setting around the premise.

It’s fairly recent. I only seem to catch two or three horror movies a year when they release, but this one has a pretty timeless premise.

Above Average

To call a movie “above average” isn’t the most flattering compliment, right? But that’s what I kept thinking throughout this movie.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The setting is absolutely fantastic. The filmmakers nailed it with the eerie, big-city atmosphere. The main character (an aspiring actress moving to a new city) is pretty played-out, but the way the city feels like a character itself isn’t as common. It’s a very menacing presence through the whole film, and sometimes it really carries the plot and characters. The cinematography and location choices really add to the overall mood, making it a perfect watch for those who love their thrillers dark and brooding.

Beyond that, however, it’s very… above average.

Specifically, I’m talking about the characters. They’re… well, they’re passable. Don’t get me wrong; they get the job done, but they don’t leave a lasting impression. The aspiring actress is like you’d expect. The issues with her boyfriend are interesting for a while, but the supporting characters are forgettable.

In a movie like this (great setting, decent characters), the plot will make or break it.

Ups and Downs And Nothings

The plot is basically this American couple moves to Bucharest, where he grew up. So right away, Julia feels estranged, because he knows the language and layout of the city and she’s brand-new, still learning. I loved this part, because it was a unique and realistic way to start the drama between them.

Of course, there just happens to be a serial killer called “The Spider” who is preying on young women in this city. Naturally, the two have a few run-ins. Nothing unexpected really happens. The individual scenes are well-done, but the plot twists and turns down a very predictable road.

There are a couple memorable side characters who meet Julia as she integrates into the city. The side cast is a revolving door, so even the good ones don’t show up in very many scenes

My main issue is the middle of the story. It lags pretty badly. They could’ve cut about twenty minutes and lost virtually nothing. And this leads to the ending, which is pretty good, not surprising at all. It won’t exactly leave your jaw on the floor. So, if you’re into mystery and suspense, it’s worth a watch, just don’t expect it to shock your socks off.

Overall: 7/10

I’m gonna give this a 7/10 rating – it’s a solid score. “The Watcher” is worth your time if you’re a fan of suspenseful thrillers with a dark atmosphere. Just don’t expect to fall head over heels for the characters. They’re serviceable, but they won’t be the reason you remember this movie. Nevertheless, if you’re in the mood for a good mystery and a sense of foreboding, give it a shot!

    1. Thank you for the note! I’ll fix that. “The Watcher” is the (pretty bad) Netflix Original show, and I got their titles confused.
